Boston Celtics Profile

Team Ceiling

1st round – This year is bad for the Celtics. They have no front court and no expectations or requirements to make a good regular season. While they shouldn’t be as bad as the Hornets or WIzards were this year, we can’t expect more than a 1st round spot for the Celtics.

Team Floor

No Playoffs – As mentioned earlier, the Celtics will probably use this year for rebuilding, finding some good rotation players for the future – such as Hugo González, Jordan Walsh… – and trying to get a good first round pick, as they have managed to keep theirs after the trades.

X-Factor

Derrick White – Not really an X-factor because the Celtics are not aiming for anything this season, but Derrick White can take advantage of this situation and get to the next level. The addition of Anfernee Simons might stop his offensive contribution and evolution, but the ~20 shots attempted by Tatum will not be taken entirely by Simons. He has a contract until 2027-28, including a player option the next year. If the Celtics manage to turn him in an even greater player, they might have a chance in another Playoffs run in the next two years, or a great asset to explore the market.

Bust

Front Court – We can’t put a bust in this team this year. The closest bet would be Anfernee Simons, but he will probably put an average season in terms of scoring, and nothing else.

The Celtics Front Court will be bad, very bad. Having Garza / Queta as your possible centers and Tillmann / Scheierman as the forwards can’t be worse. They might still get something during the offseason, but if they don’t want to reach the second apron, it must be cheap.

Dark Horse

Hugo González – First things first: he’s not going to be a superstar nor something even close to that. But they have put a lot of lights on him during the Summer League. The Celtics might try to put him on a position where he can improve and develop as a great defender, while providing good things on the offensive end. Having Jayson Tatum out for the whole season will provide Hugo a huge opportunity of making himself a spot in the league.

It would be a surprise if this Bolton Celtics team achieves anything this year. Because of their economic situation, they had to get rid of key pieces and of course the absence of Jayson Tatum is a huge blow for them. The latest news have reported that he might return this year, that would be amazing.

Nevertheless, they are still well coached and they should see this season as an opportunity to improve, develop players and grow as a team. If they are able to increase their depth, once Tatum is back and with a few market moves, they can easily get back to a competitive level sooner than later.

Jaylen Brown should shine this season, as well as Derrick White. Giving opportunities to other players should increase their market value and allow the Celtics to move them in the future, or to keep them if they fit the team.

Even though I did, the Celtics should never be discarded from anything.
