New York Knicks Profile
Team Ceiling
NBA Championship – After firing Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks have this year the opportunity to face the whole regular season and postseason with a different perspective. Their main players are playing less minutes, and even if that’s translating to more losses, it’s a great investment for the future. They already know each other so they don’t need to get rolling by playing minutes together. The team acknowledged that the key to success is to have everyone as healthy and rested as possible for the Playoffs and that seems to be the way to go for New York.
Team Floor
2nd Round – There are some teams that could give them a disputed second round, as the Pistons did last year. Even though they finished 4-2 in favor of the Knicks, most of the games were close and the Pistons are showing that they are a threat this year. If they face each other after the first round, they will need to be prepared.
X-Factor
Karl-Anthony Towns – KAT’s disconnection can cost the Knicks some games if he’s not focused on winning and helping his team. He already have notorious Playoffs experience and he should start leading this team now that they have this great opportunity for a championship.
Bust
Guerschon Yabusele – Yabusele comes from a great season but it seems that he’s relaxed now that he got his contract and is not helping the team much. If he did, he could be a great asset off the bench, giving some rest to Anunoby or even KAT – together with Mitchell Robinson. But it seems that he won’t be of much use and if continues to be like that, he won’t see much minutes neither in the regular season or in the Playoffs.
Dark Horse
Jordan Clarkson – Great addition for the Knicks. He needs to adapt to a new role where his usage will decrease by a lot – 27% last season, 21% in this one. Less shots, less presence, but the possibility of winning a championship, which was something really far away when playing for Utah. If Clarkson understand his position and really wants to win, he can provide great minutes in the Playoffs for the Knicks.
Their core is mostly secured until the 2027-28 season, which is great news. They already know each other and, with the new coach, there’s a great opportunity to win a championship in these next years.
They have also found a great rotation with the addition of Clarkson and Yabusele – if he wants to be that rotation player – and with what they already had: McBride, Shamet, Robinson… A very good 8-9 man rotation that can get them far in the Playoffs if they are well-managed.
Mike Brown has a long season ahead to make himself used to this team. Let’s see what happens also until the trade deadline in February because there are many rumors that can involve the Knicks because of the quantity of great players they have.
Let’s see if the Knicks can become great again after their last championship back in the 1972-73 season!
